John Lee Hooker: Plays & Sings The Blues (Chess/Acoustic Sounds) LP
Released in 1961 on Chess, Plays & Sings The Blues compiles studio singles from 1950 and 1952 that capture John Lee Hooker in his prime. These early recordings showcase the raw simplicity and earthy power of his distinctive style, capturing the fiercely rhythmic quality to Hooker’s playing and singing, complemented by his signature foot tapping. Standout tracks include “The Journey,” “Mad Man Blues,” “Hey Boogie,” and his take on Muddy Waters’ “Please Don’t Go.”
